I write this entry with a broken heart. We lost my Poppi early this morning.

Around the late afternoon, Jim became progressively worse. He really was laboring to breathe and had become completely unresponsive. His physicians said it was what we feared.....the bleed had gotten worse and was causing more swelling. With every breath his oxygen saturation was diminishing.

His entire family surrounded him as well as our amazing pastors. Poppi always loved to hear us girls sing, so for 6 hours that's what we did. We sang every hymn we could think of and repeated them all several times. We told stories and we just sat with him. He was completely comfortable. We did the hardest thing we've ever had to do. We had to surrender him to the will of the Lord. James Quick took his last breath at 1:20am.

Our entire family is completely devastated. We've been so fortunate to never really have to face death head on and this is going to take time, obviously. We cannot thank you enough for all the support and comforting you all brought to us over this past week. We love you. I'm sure we'll need much more. The wonderful people at Mercer Adams are taking care of him now and we will be sure to let you know details regarding his service as we make them.

Specific prayers: We know that God's grace is sufficient for all of us. Please pray that we will receive his grace and begin to heal. Please pray for Hazel. She lost her partner of over 60 years today.

What a truly amazing legacy this man has left behind. Just look at each of you. The women on "Steel Magnolias" are wimps compared to all of you. They always say behind every great man is an even greater woman and that is very true even in this instance but Hazel and Jimmy made each other great. And then they raised three amazing daughters who I had the privilege of knowing and being friends with who are just as strong. They have passed down those strengths, beliefs and convictions to now two more generations. Again, LaNeale, thank you for doing this in the midst of your grief. We love you all so much, we're grieving with you and we're praying for you!

What a tremendous loss for all of those who knew and loved Jimmy, but what an incredible blessing to have known and loved such a Godly, gentle man. You will probably never know all the lives that were touched by this sweet, sweet man. Jimmy and Hazel will always be the "gold standard" for a Christian marriage, theirs truly was a divine partnership and those of us fortunate enough to have been included in the large Quick extended family are better for having been touched by them. Our prayers and support will continue to be with each of you as you tend to the heartbreaking task of laying Jimmy to rest. LaNeale, thank you so much for keeping us updated this week, I know your Poppi is beaming as he looks down on the strong, loving woman you have become. What a legacy of love Jimmy left behind. We love you all so very much.

In a way I feel like we all just lost our dad. He was so full of love. We will miss him.

One of the loveliest men in heart, mind and spirit that I have had the good pleasure of knowing is Jimmy Quick. He always met me with a warm greeting and big smile. Though I knew him for a little less than a year, I came to love and appreciate this precious and gentle man through family outings, church, short conversations and stories that Beverly shared with me.

Being with the Quick family during this trying ordeal strengthened my faith and belief in God's wisdom and plan for the Christian family. Even during the midst of this severe trial, each member of the Quick family held Jimmy up as they praised God, in hymns, songs, scriptures, prayers, and encouraging words. Though Jim was unconscious during his last few hours, his presence filled the room. He was surrounded by his loving family to the very end; and, at the very moment of his passing, the family sang a song of praise and blessing as they surrendered him to God.

Jimmy, Hazel, Beverly, Chrissy, Beau, Grayson, LaNeale, Chris, Holland, Jay, Patty, Mark, Gary, Cassie, RianDei, Cynthia and Chris--I love you. Thank you for letting me share these precious final moments with your family. It is so clear to me that your Poppy was a bigger than life hero. Christ blessed you all through his life and I have no doubt that your lives will bless others for generations to come because of this Godly man.

What a gentle soul we have had to let go of for a time. I heard someone say once, one of the greatest witnesses in the world is a beautiful Christian family! We will miss Jimmy's great jokes and his wonderful approachable face. You will grieve to the depth of your Love. Your grief is a compliment to your capacity for Love. May the care of your friends and family carry you during this difficult time.
